Effective January 1, 2002, the Association will no longer provide back- door (garage door) trash pickup by BFI, a private contractor. The Association will be changing service to the City of Houston trash service. The City service will be curbside and will be once per week for regular trash, which includes lawn clippings and trimmings. The City will provide each of us (at no charge) a large, easily movable 90-gallon plastic can on wheels for this purpose. You may obtain additional information from the City of Houston web site at www.ci.houston.tx.us/departme/solid/, by calling the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department by dialing 311, or by calling the City of Houston solid waste collection subcontractor, Republic Waste, at 281- 446- 2030.The new trash service is scheduled as:

Map courtesy of Laurie SpragueThe City of Houston has started charging $1 per bag for additional household garbage put out for pickup. This applies to household garbage in excess of the contents of the 90- gallon can currently used. Each additional bag for pickup must have a sticker affixed to it which can be purchased, in $5 increments, from Fiesta and Sellers grocery stores or through the mail using this form (Adobe Acrobat document). These charges do not apply to bagged yard waste (leaves, clippings, etc.) or garbage put out on heavy trash days (2nd Thursday of the month). Please note that trash will not be picked up from any additional trash cans, only from the 90- gallon can provided.
From the City of Houston Solid Waste Management -- Basic Services web page at www.ci.houston.tx.us/swd/basic.htm:
The Department of Solid Waste Management's basic garbage collection services consist of (1) once- per- week residential garbage and yard waste collection; (2) once- per- month collection of heavy trash (large, bulky items); (3) neighborhood depositories; and (4) dead animal collection.
- Residential Garbage Collection
Homes receive garbage collection service once a week on an Automated Garbage Collection System. Automated collection is a technologically advanced system that employs a specially fitted refuse truck. A side arm grabs and lifts a special container, dumps the garbage into the truck and returns the container to the curb. Residents participating in the program receive a 65- or 90- gallon cart from the city, specially designed for automated collection.
- Neighborhood Depositories
Residents who wish to discard heavy trash before their scheduled once-per-month pickup may use one of three neighborhood depositories at the following locations shown below. Hours of Operation are 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. year round. The depositories are at:
- 5565 Kirkpatrick
- 9200 Lawndale
- 5100 Sunbeam
These depositories may be used by the public free of charge. Each user must provide proof of residency and may use this service four times per month.
Neighborhood depositories will not accept household garbage, more than ten tires from an individual, and large quantities of building materials. Trash from commercial haulers is not accepted.
From the City of Houston Solid Waste Management -- Add- A- Can web page at www.ci.houston.tx.us/swd/addacan.htm:
The City of Houston is implementing a new program, the Add- A- Can program, where residents will have the opportunity of having a second or third can serviced for a fee. Residents will have their first 90- gallon can serviced free of charge. The fee for servicing each additional container (maximum of 3 total) will be $7.50 per month for a minimum subscription of one year. This fee will be added to the citizen's monthly water bill upon request of the service. From the City of Houston Solid Waste Management's "Add- A- Can and Tags For Bags" flyer (Adobe Acrobat document) at www.ci.houston.tx.us/swd/addacan2.pdf:
After October 1, 2002, extra bags of garbage will only be collected if they have a special sticker attached. This new Tags For Bags program will allow residents the convenience of purchasing "tags" instead of additional cans if they require extra service only occasionally. These tags will be available at local grocery stores. Tags for Bags may also be ordered online. A minimum of five sticker tags must be purchased at one time ($1 per sticker). A $3 processing fee will be required for online orders. You can click on www.ci.houston.tx.us/swd/addacanform.pdf to make your order.
